Series 3 spoilers ahoy

Series 3 Spoiler Roundup

So series 3 news, spoilers and spec has been trickling in since April, and there's a lot of it! We thought it'd be cool to have this here as a compilation of everything we know - or think we know - so far, to spark discussion or to use as a reference in future discussions. Everything here is broken up into sections based on general content, with source links where available. Most of the links were compiled here first.

Onward!

General spoilers and info

- Series 3 takes place one year after the end of series two and Camelot is in the middle of a war. (source)
- When the season begins, Uther is going mad over the loss of Morgana. It opens with Arthur, Merlin and Uther on the hunt for her.(source 1, source 2 )
Series 3 will be darker, older, and more serialized than episodic compared to series 1 and 2. (source)
- Series 3 is very much about the core relationship between Merlin, Arthur, Morgana and Guinevere. They’ll come to the forefront of the series and there is a lot about their friendships and their allegiances. (source)
- According to con reports, more knights of the Round Table will appear this season: Lancelot, Percival, and Gawain. (source)
-The crystal cave will be a part of series 3 storylines. (source)
- The Great Dragon returns in series 3. (source)

Gwen, Arthur, and Arthur/Gwen

Arthur
-There are glimpses of Arthur being the future king and what his attitude to magic might be. (source 1, source 2 )
- Arthur and Uther reportedly have a "good" relationship in series 3, with Arthur developing more of a mind of his own but with Uther largely unaware of it. (source)

Gwen
-Gwen is still working in the castle despite the fact Morgana is not around. (source)
-There's a storyline regarding a member of Gwen's family - a brother. (source 1, source 2 )
-We'll learn more about Gwen's past. According to Angel’s comments at the 2010 May Expo, everything she does reconciles her with what she will become (in terms of inner nobility) when a member of her family appears in Camelot.

Arthur/Gwen
-Lancelot will return to ‘throw a spanner in the works’ and add barriers to Arthur and Guinevere’s relationship. (source)
-Arthur and Gwen's relationship will be tested. (source)
-A bit more kind of joust between Gwen and Arthur is to be expected as the challenges they have to face keep testing their feelings for each other. (source)
Very early on in the series we see scenes of Gwen giving Arthur great emotional support through difficult decisions he has to make, giving a glimpse of what they'll ultimately be like as King and Queen. (source)
-Arthur and Gwen's feelings for each other develop, but not openly. (source 1, source 2 )

Merlin, Morgana, and others

Merlin
-Merlin has acquired new powers and the release of the dragon has had a big impact on him. He is developing into a wise advisor in an active way to Arthur, who will actually start listening to him. (source 1, source 2 )
As of block two’s filming/script reading for series 3, no one knows about Merlin’s magic.

Morgana
-Morgana is found and brought back to Camelot. She feels alienated since she can't trust Merlin and is very aware of her magical condition.
-Her relationship with Morgause has changed. (source 1, source 2 )
According to Katie’s comments at the May 2010 Expo, Morgana's relationship with Merlin will continue to deteriorate, to the point there's no coming back from where things were left in series 2.

Other characters
-Asa Butterfield (Mordred) will not be appearing in series 3. (source)
-Gaius gets a love interest.

-Freya is coming back, she'll help Merlin getting the sword back and their emotional relationship will have continuation. (source) Also, it’s confirmed that she and Excalibur are in the same lake. (source)
- -Uther is slowly losing his grip, and that is explored a bit more in the third series. (source)

Episodes 3x01 and 3x02

The titles of 3x01 and 3x02 are (reportedly) "The Traitor Within" parts 1 and 2, respectively. (source)

Synopsis: A year has passed since Morgana disappeared, and Uther's desperate attempts to find his ward have almost destroyed his army. Following an ambush in an eerie forest, a bruised and bloody Morgana emerges, claiming to have been held prisoner by bandits all this time. When Uther begins to have terrifying visions, Gaius and Merlin realise that Morgana is a traitor and has the king gripped by a dark enchantment. Merlin releases Uther but there is worse to come: Cenred has joined forces with Morgause and a huge army is swarming towards Camelot. As Uther struggles to recover, Arthur must take charge. In the midst of the battle, Morgana quietly slips down to the vaults and unleashes a gruesome army of skeletons; she wants vengeance for the deaths Uther has caused in his quest to destroy all magical beings. Merlin confronts her, and as they fight he almost reveals his own gift. While her back is turned he uses magic to collapse the ceiling, knocking Morgana unconscious. As her spell breaks, the skeleton army crumbles and Camelot fights on to victory. To Merlin's horror, Uther mistakenly hails Morgana as Camelot's saviour and the king is more determined than ever to keep the forces of magic from his gates. can't wait to find out Gwen's brother's name, and to see Lancelot. Block 3 would put him what episode number approximately?

Also, glad to see that episodes will be more serialized. It's better for character and plot development.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! About time this show had serious female input, and Alice did such a wonderful job with 2x10. \o/
